The Acai berry is a small purplish black round shaped fruit, which is about one inch in diameter. It is similar to a grape in appearance but has comparatively less pulp and are produced n groups of 700-900 fruits and has a single seed of 7-10 mm. The fruit is grown twice every year. The seed makes up 80% of the fruit.

These berries are harvested as a food crop. The Acai palm tree was described as the one of the most important species of plants, in a study carried out in the Amazon part of Brazil, this is mainly because the Acai berry makes up a very large portion (42%) of the diet of the people and is of great economic value in this region.

The pulp and the juice of the acai berry used in various smoothies, juice blends, sodas and lots of other beverages. In some parts of northern Brazil, acai berry juice is served traditionally in gourds, along with tapioca, this drink depending on the reference of the local belonging to those particular parts can either be sweet or salty. In northern Brazil acai berry juice has gained popularity as a cold drink and mostly mixed with granola before serving. Acai is also consumed widely throughout Brazil as a popular flavor of ice cream and its juice can also be used in flavoring of liquor

The Acai berry has recently gained popularity and is being as a popular dietary supplement. Big companies sell the Acai fruit products in form of juices, instants drink powders, smoothies, tablets as well as a whole fruit. The marketers claim that this fruit increases ones energy levels, improves sexual performance, improves digestion, detoxifies the body, improves heart health, sleeping conditions and reduces cholesterol along with many other benefits. It is most commonly sold as a weight loss supplement.

Apart from the usage of the Acai fruits as food products, the Acai palm tree in itself has many commercial uses. The leaves of this tree are used to make hats, baskets, mats, brooms roof thatches for houses and the pest resistant trunk of the tree is used for providing wood for building constructions. The trunks of the Acai palm tree also yields various minerals after processing.

Comprising of about 80% of the fruits total mass, the Acai berry seeds can be ground to make livestock fodder, or can be used as a constituent of organic soil for the plants.
